Concrete core drilling is the process of drilling clean, circular holes in a concrete surface. It is one of the most effective ways to create openings for plumbing, HVAC, electrical and sprinkler systems. We can drill holes of various sizes in diameter. Regardless of the area, Fine Cut’s trained operators can core drill inside and outside.
The earliest core drills were those used by the ancient Egyptians, invented in 3000 BC. Core drills are used for many applications, either where the core needs to be preserved (the drilling apparatus used in obtaining a core sample is often referred to as a corer), or where drilling can be done more rapidly since much less material needs to be removed than with a standard bit. This is the reason that diamond-tipped core drills are commonly used in construction to create holes for pipes, manholes, and other large-diameter penetrations in concrete or stone.
Diamond concrete-core drills are the most commonly used tools for this process. The core drill bit tends to consist of a steel tube impregnated with diamond segments on the drilling end. The concrete coring drill is mounted on the rotating shaft of a concrete core-drilling machine and is secured to the wall or floor in question. A solid cylindrical concrete core or “slug” is removed from the hole once the drilling is complete.
Virtually any project that uses concrete can require core drilling, and it must be done with care in order to ensure that the overall integrity of the existing structure is maintained. A broad range of commercial projects, especially in the transportation realm, require concrete core drilling in the early stages.
Core drilling into asphalt or concrete may be necessary to make way for other underground structures or to accommodate existing construction involving underground manholes, plumbing or sprinkler systems.
Core drilling isn’t limited to just concrete. Fine Cut can core drill through structural concrete, asphalt, stone, brick and cinder block. Our team can core drill floors, ceilings, walls, floor and roof drains, sewer drains, phone, electrical, cable and fiber optic openings. We core drill for pipe bollard installation, handrail and anchor holes and even fireplace exhaust systems.
Fine Cut offers many other services like concrete slab sawing, wall sawing, and more. Call Fine Cut at (816) 540-5787 to learn more about their services.
